Cell signaling/Homeostasis Flashcards
Signal Transduction Pathway
How information is moved through the cell.
What is an example of a Signal Transduction Pathway?
Immune Response.
Pheromones
Carry messages between different individuals of the same species.
Autocrine Signaling
A cell signals itself.
Juxtacrine Signaling
Cells touch to share signal.
Paracrine Signaling
Cells are near each other but don’t touch.
Endocrine Signaling
Cells use bloodstream to signal other cells across long distances.
3 Stages of a Signal Transduction Pathwayq
Reception, Transduction, Response
Reception
Hormone binds to specific receptor protein in/on target cell.
Transduction
Triggers event within target cell, converting signal from one form to another.
Response
Change in cell’s behavior.
Ligand
Signal that binds to a receptor.
Homeostasis
The regulation of the internal environment of an organism when the external environment changes.
Negative Feedback Loop
Reverse the change
Positive Feedback Loop
Amplify the change
