Cell revision Flashcards
What are cells?
They are the basic unit of life
What are the smallest animals & plants made up of?
One cell
What does multicellular mean?
Made up of many cells grouped into tissues and organs
What does an animal cell have?
A cytoplasm, cell membrane & nucleus
What does a plant cell have?
A nucleus, cell membrane, cell wall, chloroplast, vacuole & cytoplasm
What is the function of a nucleus?
Contains DNA which controls the cells activities
What is the function of a cytoplasm?
The site of cell chemical reactions
What is the function of a cell membrane?
Controls what substances go in & out of a cell
What is the function of a chloroplast
Where sugars are made in the cell by photosynthesis
What is the function of a vacuole?
Stores dissolved salts & sugars
What is the function of a cell wall
Supports the cell & helps it to keep its shape
What are specialised cells?
Cells in multicellular organism which are specialised to carry out a particular function
Gives some examples of specialised cells
Egg cell, sperm cells, RBC & gut lining cells
What are specialised cells grouped into?
They are grouped into tissues
What do organs contain?
Several types of tissues
