Cell division Flashcards
Why do cells need to divide?
They need to divide so that organisms can grow and repair themselves
What is a zygote?
It’s a fertilised egg
How does a zygote become an adult human?
The zygote divides & divides again.
Zygote divides to form 2 identical daughter cells, this process keeps happening
Why do our cells need to divide throughout life?
To replace cells that wear out quickly, eg. RBC
RBC are made from bone marrow
New cells are needed to repair damaged tissues
What happens before a cell divides?
All it’s DNA is copied so that it can be passed on to the new cells
What happens to the chromosomes during cell division?
They appear and separate into 2 copies
What is a chromatid?
The two copies of chromosome/ chromatid= 1 copy
What is a centromere?
The structure that holds the chromatids together
What happens to the original parent cell during cell division?
Divide to produce 2 identical daughter cells with the same number of chromosomes in their nuclei as original cell
What are the 5 stages?
- Parent cell=chromosomes invisible
- Chromosomes visible
- Chromosomes line up
- Chromosomes split into chromatids
- Daughter cells= 2 new nuclei form and the cells divide
What is cancer?
Condition in which the cells divide in an uncontrolled way
How can you grow yeast on an agar plate?
Dip the inoculating loop into the yeast culture, streak the plate, seal & label, incubate for 24 hours
Why is it important to keep everything sterile when growing yeast?
It’s important to keep everything sterile so your sample isn’t contaminated
