Cell Review - Nucleus Flashcards
1
Q
Nucleus
A
General Location/Appearance:
- membrane-bound central body with pores in its membrane
Function:
- Command center of the cell containing DNA instructions
2
Q
Nucleolus
A
- dark coloured body inside the nucleus
Function:
- produces ribosomes which in turn synthesize proteins from RNA
3
Q
Chromatin
A
- A complex of DNA and proteins in the nucleus
Function:
- RNA instructions are produced from the DNA in the chromatin
4
Q
Nuclear Membrane
A
- double membrane surrounding the nucleus
- has pores
Function:
- releases messenger RNA produced from the DNA and used by the ribosomes to produce proteins
Note:
- RNA is able to be released through these pores
5
Q
What is the chemical composition of a nucleosome?
A
DNA and proteins (Histones)
6
Q
What is the function of the nucleosome components named above?
A
- DNA contains the genetic code to build RNA, and ultimately proteins
- histones keep the DNA wound in an organized fashion
