Biology Introduction Flashcards
1
Q
What is biology?
A
The study of all living things, including prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms
2
Q
Homeostasis
A
All living organisms, including individual cells, endeavour to maintain a stable internal environment, despite external change
3
Q
What is the cell a basis of?
A
The cell is the fundamental unit of structure and function of life.
4
Q
What is the smallest structure considered to be alive?
A
The cell
5
Q
What are the 7 characteristics of living things? All living things are:
A
- Are organized (cells, tissues, organs)
- Acquire materials and energy (and use them)
- Reproduce
- Respond to stimuli (danger, food)
- Are homeostatic (maintain pH, temp, etc.)
- Grow and develop (life stages, after injury)
- Are adapted (suited to their way of life
6
Q
Characteristics of Eukaryotic cells
A
- Exukaryotic cells have nuclei and other membrane-based organelles
- more advanced cell type
- ex. Animal cell, plant cell, fungus cell
7
Q
Characteristic of prokaryotic cells
A
- Have a cell membrane, but no membrane-based organelles
- less advanced cell type
- have no nucleus, but do have DNA (stored in nucleoid region)
- ex. Bacteria
8
Q
Characteristics of the Plant cell
A
- a eukaryotic cell
- they have chloroplasts which allow plants to produce sugar from sunlight in the process of photosynthesis
- has a non-living cell wall for structure
- no centrioles
