Cell Review Flashcards
Cell membrane
Location:
- External boundary of the cell
Function:
- Confines cell contents; regulates entry and exit of material
Lysosome
Location: Throughout cell
Function: Contain digestive enzymes (breakdown)
Mitochondria
Location: Scattered throughout the cell
Function: Controls release of energy from foods; forms ATP
Microvilli
Location: Projections of the cell membrane
Function: Increase the membrane surface area
Golgi Apparatus
Location: Between nucleus and cell membrane
Function: modify, process, and package proteins/lipids
Centrioles
Location: two rod-shaped bodies near the nucleus
Function: “spin” the mitotic spindle (cell division)
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
Membranes without ribosomes
Function: process molecules and send to Golgi apparatus
Rough endoplasmic reticulum
Membranes studded with ribosomes
Function: proteins are made on the ribosomes and transporting
Ribosomes
Location: attached to membranes or scattered in the cytoplasm
Function: synthesize proteins from RNA that comes from DNA
Inclusions
- Folding of the cell membrane
Function: allows cells to take in substances
Cilia
Location: hair-like projections from cell surface
Function: act in unison to move substances across cell surface in one direction
Microtubules
Location: internal structure of centrioles; Part of the cytoskeleton
Function: Maintain cell shape and help in movement within cell
Peroxisomes
Location: Throughout cell
Function: Breakdown specific toxins
Filaments
Location: part of the cytoskeleton
Function: contractile protein (actin); moves cell or cell parts as microvilli
