Cell reproduction and the Continuity of Life: Asexual reproduction methods Flashcards
Test review
What are the traits of asexual reproduction?
-One parent
-No eggs/sperm
-Offspring is identical to parents
-Produces many offspring in little time
-Simple organisms
-Less parental care
-No energy spent finding mate
What is Binary fission?
Single parent replicates genetic material than divides into two equal parts.
What are the traits of sexual reproduction?
-Two parents
-Eggs and sperm form a zygote
-Similar to parent, increases variety
-Fewer offspring in less time
-Complex organisms
-More parental care
-Energy spent finding mates
What organisms use binary fission?
-Single celled amoeba
-Bacteria
What is budding?
Part of the cell pushes out forming a growth or bud. The bud eventually pinches off the parent and forms a new organism. Sometimes may remain attached to the parent, but grow independently.
What organisms use budding?
-Yeasts
-Hydra
-Sponges
-Spider Plants
What is fragmentation?
Broken off part of an organism grows into an identical clone of the parent.
What organisms use fragmentation?
-Starfish
-Japanese Knotweed
What is vegetative propagation?
Special cells divide repeatedly, forming a structure that eventually develops into a plant identical to the parent. (Occurs usually in plant stems/roots)
What organisms use vegetative propagation?
-Strawberries (runners)
-Tulips (Bulbs)
-Potatoes (eyes)
-Grapes (cuttings)
What is spore formation?
Mitosis produces reproductive cells (spores). Each spore may possibly grow into a new organism identical to the parent. Many have tough outer coatings to resist tough conditions.
What organisms use spore formation?
-Bacteria
-Fungi
-Moss
-Ferns
What is parthenogenesis?
Egg develops into an adult without fertilization.
What organisms use parthenogenesis?
-Balsam wooly aphid
-Honey Bees
-Whiptail Lizard
