Cell reproduction and the Continuity of Life: Sperm and Eggs Flashcards
Test review
What is spermatogenesis?
The production of sperm.
What are the parts of a sperm?
The head and the tail.
How is sperm produced?
Special cells in the testis undergo meiosis and produce 4 haploid sperm cells.
What is the function of the tail?
Made up of the midpiece (contains energy releasing mitochondria) and a flagellum (propels the sperm forward).
What is the function of the head?
It contains the nucleus, which contains chromosomes. Top of the head has the acrosome, producing enzymes allowing it to enter the egg.
What is oogenesis?
The production of eggs.
How are eggs produced?
Eggs are produced within follicles (Cell clusters that surround and prepare the egg) of the ovaries. The egg’s size increases with added nutrients. Three polar bodies are produced during egg meiosis, but they disintegrate.
