Cell Organelles and Arrangements + The Fluid Mosaic Model Flashcards
What structu the fluid mosaic model demonstrating?
the structure of the cell membrane
Why is the fluid model model widely accepted?
Because the:
-estimated surface area
- chemical analysis
-electron microscope studies
- functions associated with the cell membrane are accounted for
- are all compatible with the model
How does the fluid mosaic model show the cell membrane
as a ‘lipid sea” with many various proteins
What is the function of a membrane?
they act as gatekeepers of the cell, controlling what can enter and what can leave a cell
How are membranes distributed in eukaryotic cells?
they have a cell surface membrane around the outside of their cells, and membranes inside the cell around some of their organelles
What is an organelle?
subcellular structures that carry out specific functions
What is the effect of membranes surrounding organelles?
they allow different conditions in the organelles and so different reactions to occur in separate regions of the cells
What is compartmentalization?
the separation of cell components
How many layers of cell membrane are possible?
1) one or single layer
2) two layers or double membrane
Which organelles have a double membrane?
- the nucleus
- the mitochondria
- the chloroplasts
