Cell Membranes Flashcards
Which phospholipids are located on the extracellular side of the cellular membrane?
Phosphatidylcholine, glycolipids, sphingomyelin
Which phospholipids are located on the intracellular side of the cellular membrane?
Phosphatidylserine, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylethanolamine
What is Niemann-Pick disease?
Deficiency in sphingomyelinase (breaks down sphingomyelin)
Causes hepatosplenomegaly, neurologic damage, and “cherry red spots” in eyes
Which antigen does the Rh factor apply to?
ONLY the D angiten
How does temperature affect membrane fluidity?
Temp > Tm = optimal fluidity
Temp»_space;> Tm = too fluid
Temp
How do saturated VS unsaturated lipids affect membrane fluidity?
Saturated = decrease fluidity Unsaturated = increase fluidity
How does cholesterol affect membrane fluidity?
In rigid membranes = increases fluidity
In fluid membranes = decreases fluidity
What is Spur Cell Anemia?
Increase in cholesterol in RBCs causing decreased fluidity and flexibility.
Causes RBCs to lyse as they move through capillaries in the spleen
