Cell Membrane Flashcards
What is the inner leaflet of the phospholipid bilayer composed of?
Phosphotidylethanolamine Phosphotidylserine (neg charged) Phosphotidylinositol (neg charged) (important in cell signaling)
Where is cholesterol found and what is it’s purpose?
Located within the phospholipid bilayer.
In high temps- gives cell structure and reduces permeability to small molecules.
In low temps- stops membrane from freezing and maintains fluidity.
What is glycocalyx?
Not an integral part of the cell.
Carbohydrates coat the extracellular surface of cell
What are lipid rafts?
Landing spots for things the cell wants to invest, has receptors.
Small patches of cholesterol and sphingolipids.
What is in the outer leaflet of the phospholipid bilayer.
Phosphatidylcholine
Phosphatidylethanolamine
Sphingomyelin
Glycolipids- create a cell coat involved in cell-cell interactions and conveys antigenicity.
