Cell Life Cycle And Mitosis Flashcards
Mitosis
Cell division process that occurs in somatic cells (all but sex cells)
Nuclear division
Cell cycle
Depicts the steps in the division of a somatic cell; all changes a cell undergoes in structure and function
Meiosis
Cell division process that occurs in sex cells
Cytokinesis
Division of cytoplasm; contractile ring of microfilament proteins pinch mother cell into 2 separate cells
Cleavage furrow marks place of division
Haploid (N)
Unpaired, 1/2 chromosomes (23)
Diploid (2N)
23 pairs of chromosomes (homologous) for a total of 46
Interphase
Time between cell divisions during which cell maintains itself and carries out normal metabolic activity
G1 phase of interphase
Cell grows and produces new organelles; continue usual metabolic activity; structures for DNA replication are formed (centriole pairs)
G2 phase of interphase
Centriole replication is completed, organelle production continues, enzymes needed for cell division are synthesized
S phase of interphase
46 chromosomes replicated (synthesis)
Prophase
Genetic material condenses into chromosomes
Metaphase
Line up chromosomes along spindle
Anaphase
Pull apart sister chromatids
Telophase
Division if cytoplasm (cytokinesis), cleavage furrow forms
By completion of telophase you have two daughter cells
