cell division and stem cells Flashcards

1
Q

What is mitosis?

A
  • type of cell division used for
    ~ growth
    ~ repair of damaged cells
    ~ replacement of old cells
  • Produces two daughter cells they are bot
    ~genetically identical
    ~ same amount of chromosomes as mother cell

Q

What occurs during meiosis?

A
  • DNA replicates but the
    chromosome and its copy remain
    attached.
    One of each pair of
    chromosomes goes into a new cells
  • 4 new cells are formed
  • Each cell has half the chromosomes the mother cell has
  • haploid
  • Cells are not genetically identical to the mother cell

Q

Inside the cell nucleus

A
  • chromosomes are linear arrangements of genes
  • Genes code for characteristics
    -Chromosomes come in
    pairs, one from each
    parent.
  • genes come
    in pairs.
  • An allele is a
    different version of the
    same gene.
    Gene = eye colour
    Allele = brown, blue,
    green or hazel
