Cell division Flashcards
what is the difference between mitosis and meiosis?
mitosis is when a cell divides to produce two genetically identical cells, has 1 division and produces 2 new cells. Meiosis is the production of sex cells has 2 divisions and produces 4 new cells.
What does the cell cycle (mitosis) involve?
interphase- the growth phase- split into G1, S phases and G2. mitosis- the dividing stage and consists of prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase.
What occurs in the S phase?
DNA replication
in which stage of the cell cycle will DNA helicase and DNA polymerase be made?
g1
in which stage of the cell cycle mutations most likely to occur?
the s-phase as that’s where DNA replication is occurring
What is differentiation?
when cells become specialised
What can uncontrolled cell division lead to?
the formation of tumours.
what are cancer cells?
cells that undergo repeated, controlled cell division (mitosis)
what is a tumour?
a large group of cancer cells
