cell division Flashcards
what happens in the interphase
the cells grow in size, increases its sub cellular structures ie. nucleus; everything inside the nucleus. And then the DNA( where genetic material is stored) replicates.
what happens during mitosis( AFTER THE INTERPHASE)
1) The DNA replicates into 2 sets of chromosomes.(prophase)
2) the chromosomes line up in the middle(mitotic spindle) (metaphase)
3) After separated into each side of the cell.(anaphase)
4) the cell is pinched in between, divides and makes 2 identical daughter cells(cytokinesis phase)
what are the functions of mitosis?
1) it is important for growth and development of multicellular organisms i.e.. plants and animals
2) mitosis takes place when an organism repairs itself
3) mitosis happens during asexual reproduction ( it is a type of reproduction that doesn’t include fusion of 2 gametes)
why is mitosis important?
1) produces identical daughter cells that have the same genetic material
2) produces additional cells that are helpful for growth and repair( skin cell damaged -> mitosis got u)
what are stem cells?
a cell that is undifferentiated and which is capable to differentiate into other type of cells, and which are self renewal( can help us -> in -terms of repair).
what are the function of embryonic stem cells ( cells that are in the embryo-> making the tissues , outline of the baby)
1) embryonic stem cells can differentiate into many types of other cells
2) they also can help cure conditions such as diabetes and paralysis (by dividing to replace damaged cells)
what are the function of adult stem cells in the bone marrow?
1) Ault stem cells can differentiate themselves into several other types of cells , to replace dead or damaged tissues (however not as much as embryonic stem cells).
2) example of Ault stem cells is that it could form into many: types of blood cells such as white blood cells , red blood cells and platelets.
what is the function of stem cells in the plant’s meristem
the function of the stem cells in plants is that they can differentiate into any plant cell , unlike embryonic cells only there for a period of time ( until your an adult) , stem cells in plants are life long -(ebf:- lifetime)
where are the stem cells located in a plant?
the stem cells are located in the meristem of the plant
what is therapeutic cloning?
embryo that is cloned with the same genetic material - which gives no problem(EBF:-no rejection) ,which can treat paralysis and diabetes.
