Cell Diversity Flashcards
Tissue
A group of similar cells that are modified to carry out the same function
4 plant tissues are…
Dermal, vascular, ground, merimastic
Ground tissue
makes up the bulk of a plant, is where photosynthesis happens - has a lot of chloroplast
Vascular tissue
Xylem transports water + dissolved minerals and has continuous hollow tubes with pits in walls to allow for the sideways movement of water
Phloem transports food
4 animal tissues
Epithelial, connective, muscle and nervous
muscle tissue
Is composed of muscle cells, aids in the movement of the skeleton
Adapted to have lots of mitochondria for ATP for energy
Nervous tissue
Carries electrical impulses to + from the body
Adapted to have a lot of shwann cells to produce myelin
Tissue culture
Growth of cells in/on a sterile nutrient artificial medium outside the body (in vitro)
Micropropagation
Growth of lots of plant cells of a parent plant
Rapid
Monoclonal antibodies
Combine with a specific type of antigen
Cancer research
Skin graft
Patient’s skin is grown in vitro + grafted onto wound
Circulatory system
Heart, blood vessels, lymph vessels, lymph.
Transports materials around the body + fights infection
Digestive system
Mouth, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine + anus
Takes in food, breaks it down, transfers the digested food into the circulatory system, so it can be carried to cells in the body.
