Cell Cycle/Division Flashcards
1
Q
Describe the three main stages of mitosis.
A
- The cells grow, and the chromosomes are replicated, as well as making mitochondria etc.
- Spindle fibres pull the chromosomes to each end.
- The cytoplasm and cell membrane divide.
2
Q
How many pairs of chromosomes do human body cells have?
A
23 pairs.
3
Q
What are sex cells known as?
A
Gametes.
4
Q
What happens to differentiated cells which cannot divide?
A
They are replaced by adult stem cells.
5
Q
What is a meristem?
A
An actively dividing plant tissue.
6
Q
What do an egg and sperm fuse to form?
A
A zygote.
7
Q
What can be found in the inner layers of the embryo?
A
Embryonic stem cells.
8
Q
The forming of gametes involves which type of cell division?
A
Meiosis.
9
Q
