Cell Anatomy Flashcards
Plasma Membrane
made up of phospholipid bilayer, communicates with other cells, controls transport of molecules into and out of a cell
Cytoplasm
site of all intracellular activities excluding nucleus, cellular soup
Cytoskeleton
shapes, supports and moves cell organelles
Centrosome
grows mitotic spindle for mitosis and microtubules
Cilla and flagella
Cilla moves fluid over a cell surface, flagella moves entire cell
Ribosome
synthesises proteins, made up of two subunits containing ribosomal RNA and proteins.
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
synthesises glycoproteins and phosphoproteins using ribosomes
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
synthesises fatty acids and steroids. Specialised organ function (liver=detoxification, muscle=calcium storage, kidneys=release of glucose)
Golgi Complex
Modifies, sorts, repackages and transports proteins from ER through secretory and transport vesicles.
Lysosome
Disposes and recycles cellular waste.
Peroxisome
Plays a role of detoxification in liver.
Mitochondrion
POWERHOUSE OF THE CELL.
site of aerobic cellular respiration reactions that produce most of cell’s ATP. Contain own DNA and have close communication with nucleus.
Nucleus
Determines, shape, function and cellular homeostasis. Contains 23 pairs of chromosomes as chromatin. Nucleolus makes RNA. Nuclear pores control movement of substances between nucleus and cytoplasm.
