Celestial Bodies Flashcards
What is a celestial body?
A natural made object outside the earths atmosphere
What is a satellite?
An object orbiting a celestial body of large mass
What is a star?
A celestial body that generates its own light and heat and consists off a mass of gas held together by its own gravity
What is a planet?
A celestial body that is in orbit around a star
What is a moon?
A natural satellite of a planet
What is an asteroid?
A small rocky body in space
What is a comet?
A dusty snowball that orbits a star
What is a solar system?
A solar system is a group of planets, asteroids, comets and other celestial bodies that are in orbit around a star
What is galaxy?
A large system of stars held together by their gravity e.g. Milky Way
What are the 6 celestial bodies?
Moon,stars,comets,asteroids,meteor,planets
What are the rules to be classified as a planet?
Be in orbit around a star, have enough mass to form its own shape, have cleared the region around its orbit of other celestial bodies
Which planet has the most moons?
Saturn
What is a meteor?
A solid object from outer space that enters the earths atmosphere
Where are comets and asteroids found?
The main asteroid belt
What model of the universe is correct
Heliocentric
What model of the universe is incorrect
Geocentric
What is the Big Bang?
How astronomers know how the unveiling was created
When did the Big Bang theory happen?
13.8 billion years ago
How big was the universe before the Big Bang?
Smaller then a pin head
What was the heat and texture of the universe?
Hot and dense
What happend later on?
The universe exploded creating time, space and matter
What are 2 pieces of evidence that cover the Big Bang?
An energy called “cosmic background radiation” was discovered and Edwin Hubble and Vesto Slipher discovered that the universe was expanding
