Animals Cells Flashcards
What is a cell?
A cell is the smallest working unit of a living thing ( organism)
What are the characteristics of a living thing?
Movement, reproduction, sensitivity,feeding,excretion,respiration,growth
What is the rough estimation of how many cells are in a living thing?
Billions
What object needs to be required to see a cell?
A microscope
Who was the first person to see a cell under a microscope?
Robert Hooke
What are the different types of cells?
Blood cells,skin cells,nerve cell, animal,cell ,sperm cell
Who has cells?
All living things
What is a unicellular?
Made up of only 1 cell e.g. bacteria
What is a multicellular?
Many cells e.g. human
What are the parts of a microscope?
Stage,eyepiece,nosepiece,course focus wheel,light,fine focus wheel,objective lense
What is the function of an eyepiece?
To magnify and view the specimen
What is the function of a light?
To see the specimen
What is the function of a course focus wheel?
To focus the specimen roughly
What is the function of a fine focus wheel?
To fine-tune the image of the specimen
What is the function of a stage?
To hold the specimen (glass slide)
What is the function of the objective lens?
To magnify the specimen
What are the parts of the animal cell?
Nucleus, mitochondria,cell membrane,cytoplasm,ribosome
What is the function of a cell membrane?
Mostly made up of fat, protects the cell and allows substances in and out of the cell
What is the function of the nucleus?
Carries genes, which control the activities of the cell
What is the function of the cytoplasm?
A watery fluid of salts and food in which cells float
What is the function of the mitochondria?
Where energy is released from food in respiration
What is the function of the ribosome?
Makes protein (ie hormones enzymes
What equipment do you need for a cheek cell experiment?
Microscope, sample…cheek cells,cotton bud, methylene blue,slide,cover slip
What is the method for a cheek cell experiment?
- Use a clean lollipop stick to clean the inside of the cheek.
2.rub the stick gently across a clean glass slide. Allow the cells to dry onto the slide.
3.add 1 drop of methylene blue stain to the cheek cells. - Tilt the slide so that the stain covers the cheek cell
6.place a cover slip onto the slide at a 45 degree angle and lower gently to avoid air bubbles
How do you calculate the magnification caused by a light microscope?
Multiply the eyepiece magnification by the objective lens magnification
