Q

Chenneville: Decision Making Model used for the HIV dilemma

A

Step 1: determine if disclosure is warranted
-requires assessment of forseeability of harm (p.186 for list of questions to assess this)
-Identifiability of the victim
Step 2: Refer to professional ethics guidelines
Step 3: Refer to state guidelines
-Permissive disclosure: disclosure is allowed but not mandated
+Assess clients willingness to tell sexual partners, willingness for treatment, etc, prior to disclosing
+Disclosing should only be done if the client is unwilling to minimize the risk to others
-Required disclosure: must disclose, but should try to convince client to disclose before doing so, and should also try to get clients consent to disclose
-Mandatory confidentiality: encourage client to inform partners and work on underlying issues regarding what they don’t want to disclose
