CBT Flashcards
Principles of CBT
- problem focused
- emphasizes present with links to past
- time-limited
- teaches skills to change negative thought patterns
- structured and requires homework (engaged patient)
Simple Cognitive Model
- situation/event –> single event (either real or thought)
- automatic thoughts –> patterned, negative
- reaction (emotional, physiological, behavioral)
Automatic thoughts
- almost all negative, overgeneralizations
- distort reality
- occur spontaneously, may barely enter awareness
- believed to be true
- sometimes coexist with images
Triggering event
- external event
- stream of thoughts
- emotion
- behavior
- sensations
The ‘unlocking’ question
What were you thinking about just then?
Evaluating ANTs
test its validity –> evidence?
look for other interpretations –> other explanations
decatastrophize the situation –> can be worse
get distance from it –> perspective
engage problem-solving
Common ‘thinking errors’
- All-or-nothing
- catastrophizing
- discouting positive
- magnifying/minimizing
- mind reading
- over-generalizing
- shoulding
- personalizng
Rational responses
fit the facts testable refute ANTs reduce distress point toward action plan
Adaptive response questions
Evidence that ANT is true?
Alternative explanation?
Worst that can happen? Best that can happen?
How does ANT affect me?
What would he/she do if friend was like this?
Core beliefs
early experiences contribute to development of core beliefs about yourself, your world, and others
- lead to ANT
Truth about core beliefs
thoughts --> not truth can feel true can be tested may be rooted in childhood maintained by highly selective cognitive filters can be changed
