CBT Flashcards
What does NICE recommend for all people with schizophrenia?
All people with schizophrenia should receive Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
NICE emphasizes the importance of CBT as a treatment option for schizophrenia.
What was CBT originally designed to treat?
CBT was originally designed to treat non-psychotic disorders, such as depression
This highlights the adaptability of CBT to various mental health conditions.
What is a key component of the therapeutic process in CBT?
The therapist engages with the patient about their feelings
Engagement is crucial for the effectiveness of CBT.
What is the purpose of identifying irrational thoughts in CBT?
To help the patient understand the consequences of their irrational thoughts
This understanding can lead to better coping mechanisms.
How many planned individual sessions does NICE recommend for patients?
At least 16 planned individual sessions
This recommendation aims to provide sufficient support for recovery.
What is the goal of using gentle questioning in CBT?
To help patients understand their illogical thoughts
Gentle questioning is a technique used to encourage self-reflection.
What does Ellis’ model focus on in CBT?
Dysfunctional thinking and irrational thought patterns
Understanding these patterns is essential for effective therapy.
What are the expected outcomes of CBT for schizophrenia according to NICE?
Improved relapse rates compared to treatment with medication alone
This suggests that CBT can be an effective complementary treatment.
What is one advantage of CBT for patients with chronic conditions?
CBT provides greater opportunities to support patients on a long-term basis
This support can be crucial for managing chronic mental health issues.
Why might CBT not be appropriate for all patients in acute stages?
Due to their lack of self-reflection caused by strong symptoms
Patients with severe symptoms may struggle to engage in therapy.
What is a common issue with the generalizability of CBT?
CBT may not be suitable for everyone and can be too expensive
Economic factors can limit access to mental health treatments.
What percentage of participants in Haddlock et al.’s study selected offered CBT?
13% of participants selected offered CBT
This low percentage raises questions about accessibility and acceptance.
Strength: SE, NICE found CBTp improved relapse rates compared to drugs alone
CBTp has ability to support patients on long-term basis and provide greater opportunities for symptom management, allowing more people to go back to work and therefore support economic growth of the economy.
CA: however most research does not control for effects of drugs so it is difficult to conclude if it is the CBTp having an effect of not the medication
Limitation: application to all sz patients
Addington and Addington: CBTp with patient in acute stage of sz not appropriate because of their lack of self reflection (due to experiences of strong symptoms e.g. delusions). Limitation because CBTp won’t work if don’t engage so not appliable to all schizophrenics. So have to use drugs to control symptoms to engage in therapy.
CA: drugs or CBTp
Limitation: lack of availability
1 in 19 have access to CBTp. OE Haddock et al: 13% participants selected were offered CBTp. CBTp lacks generalisability because not offered to everyone. Maybe because too expensive. This has a negative effect on the economy because schizophrenics can’t recover and get back to work.
CA: however most people offered often and refused and have access to it
Process of CBTp
1) assessment of situation
2) therapist engages with patient and their feelings (unconditional positive regard)
3) activating event, traced to origin, patient identify problems
4) identify consequence of irrational thoughts, what causes them?
5) therapist helps patient believe behaviour is normal to occur (patient feels less stress)
6) therapist uses gentle questioning, helps patient understand a logical thoughts (voice fail, why can’t I hear?
7) patient develops different reasons for previous irrational thoughts. Healthier explanation weakening functional for patterns.
