Causes Of Disease Flashcards
What are bacteria cells and what are they made up of
Bacteria are simple cells. they don’t contain a nucleus, mitochondria or any other membrane bound organelles. All the normal cell functions are carried out in the cytoplasm
How does bacteria cause disease?
When they invade the body, they cause disease by releasing toxins which damage body cells. they tend to be less specific than viruses in the tissues that they inhabit, which means a single species of bacterial can cause several different diseases depending where in the body it invades. Some bacterial are harmless while in one part of the body, but can cause death if they reach another.
What is an example of a bacteria that are harmless in one part of the body but can cause death in another part?
E.coli, a bacterium that usually lives in the small intestines of mammals. While there, it helps produce vitamin K for the host, however, if E.Coli enters the blood stream it can cause septicaemia which can be life threatening.
