Symmetry of the verse mirrors the supposed symmetry of their relationship
Lesbia dicit semper male nec tacet umquam
Lesbia is always complaining about me and never stops talking
dicit semper and nec tacet umquam are tautological- both mean the same thing. Emphasises her talkativeness and her tendency to repeat herself.
enjambment of lines 1 and 3
emphasises incessant talking
quo signo?
on what evidence?
sets up an imaginary dialogue w. the reader.
signum in latin = semeion in Greek, which means a material which justifies a philosophical point
assidue, verum dispeream amo
all the time, but may i perish if i do not love her
line framed by most important words- all the time and love.
Also poem ends w. emphatically placed ‘love’.
