why are many churches high vaulted with spires?
because they are built to connect with heaven in a way that prayers can be passed up to god
define a lectern and it’s significance
a lectern is the bookstand in which the readings are said from during mass, it is significant as it plays an important role during the liturgy of the word
what is the altar and what does it represent?
it is the table in which most of the mass is said from and is the focal point of the church
it helps remember the last supper and jesus’ passion
define a crucifix and it’s significance
a cross with a crucified jesus on it and it helps signify jesus’ suffering
what is a tabernacle? (christianity)
a box which contains the consecrated host (or eucharist) is kept

sacred vessels, sarcophagi and hunger cloths

help focus prayer and worship for catholics
what are sacred vessels?
objects that contain the body and blood of christ, used during the liturgy of the eucharist
ciborium (covered dish), chalice and plate
how does a sarcophagus help focus prayer for catholics?
has religious storied or images carved into the side which act as a way of remembering bible stories which can help focus catholics during prayer
what are hunger cloths?
altar covers used first in the middle ages during lent that depict bible stories that reminding people of god’s loving nature
what is the meaning and significance of artwork within the church?
depicts bible stories and parables in an easier way, allow children and illiterate people to understand better and allow focus during worship
what are the problems with using artwork as a way of expression?
some people, including protestants see it as idolatry and taking the real focus away from prayer and on the art itself
why are statues used during worship?
to help focus catholics on their prayer and on god
what are some ways of catholics expressing beliefs to statues?
kneel before them/touch or kiss them/light a candle for them/pray before them
what are some problems regarding using statues and sculptures during worship?
some branches of chistianity (like protestants) see it as a form of idolatry and therefore breaking the 10 commandments by worshiping false idols - also comes up when talking about worship with mary
why were christian symbols originally used?
to avoid detection when christianity was an illegal faith and for early christians to communicate with one another
what does the ‘chi rho’ represent and why is it used?
the first two letters in the word ‘christ’ in greek
it was the symbol used by the romans when christianity was adopted as the official faith, is now often fund on vestments or on the altar
what does the eagle represent?
it’s a symbol of the divine nature of Jesus and is a symbol of the evangelist john (found in protestant churches on the lectern)
what are the two forms of religious drama?
passion plays and mystery plays
what are passion plays?
plays that focus on the events leading up to jesus’ death and resurrection
what are the positives of expressing belief using drama?
can be a way to remember bible stories and visualise in a powerful way, those participating are doing a form of worship and it can help focus prayer for those watching
what are the 4 types of musical worship?
hymns, plainchant, psalms and worship songs (pop or contemporary music)
