What is the primary purpose of a Casualty Report (CASREP) message?
It is to inform operational and tactical commanders of specific mission degradations and operating limitations.
An equipment malfunction or deficiency that cannot be corrected with 48 hrs & affects: -Unit’s ability to perform a primary mission -Unit’s ability to perform a secondary mission -A training command’s ability to perform it’s mission

The four main parts of a CASREP
Basic element of reported information & is either formatted or unformatted. Each field contains one specific element of date or chain of related elements.
Definition of a Data Field
Data Fields may be made up of:
-Variable length fields -Fixed length fields
-Mandatory: Must be included every time a particular type of report is used. -Conditional: are required only under certain conditions. -Optional: May be included at the discretion of the originator.
Types of Data Sets
What is always the first set of the message text & is mandatory on all four types of CASREPs?
The Message Identification Set (MSGID)
Specifies the particular report being submitted in this message.
Message Type
The type & hull number, followed by the reporting name of the unit or command for which the CASREP is submitted.
Message Originator
Sequential number assigned by the MESSAGE.
Message Serial Number (MSGID)
Identifies the date-time group of the Initial CASREP message.
Reference Set (REF)
Reports present location of the reporting unit. It report the geographical location or Port name where the unit is presently located.
Position Set
Identifies an item of equipment about which casualty information is being reported.
Equipment Casualty Set
Request outside assistance to correct an equipment casualty that is beyond the unit’s capability to repair.
Outside Assistance Set
Supplies an explanation or additional information about the preceding data set & must directly follow that data set.
Amplification Set
Reports the estimated date that repairs will be completed & factors that may affect the projected repair schedule for this particular casualty.
Estimated Time of Repair Set (ESTIMATE)
Reports pertinent identifying information about an equipment item being reported in a CASREP.
Parts Identification Set (PARTID)
It identifies the name and number of the technical manual pertaining to the casualty item.
Technical Publication Set (TECHPUB)
Identifies the parts required to repair an equipment casualty.
Equipment Casualty Parts Set (1PARTS)
identifies MILSTRIP data to enable staff personnel to expedite the delivery of parts required to correct an equipment casualty.
MILSTRIP Information Set (1STRIP)
Supplies an explanation or additional information concerning all or part of a message.
Remarks Set (RMKS)
