Caster Semenya Flashcards
1
Q
Who was caster
A
- Was an olympic runner who had to undergo sex testing to determine if she was eligible to compete as a woman
- Sex was questioned because of her “muscular appearance” and ability to run extremely fast
- Banned at 18 years old from competing
2
Q
What regulations were created about testosterone?
A
- New regulations said to be eligible to compete as woman you had to have a certian level of testosterone, on the assumption that testosterone was the reson behind a difference in athletic performance
- If women have too much of male hormone they will be considered to have a competitive advantage
- May have to undergo treatment to lower levels of “androgen”
3
Q
But why was this problematic?
A
- But there is not enough scientific proof to show higher testosterone gives women a competitive advantage
- Even if it did, doesnt give right to ban Caster because just because she may have an advantage doesnt mean its an UNFAIR one
- Tons of athletes have biological advantages ex: taller, higher lung capacity, etc
4
Q
What happened when other athletes had biological advantages?
A
They were praised for their successes
- the big question here is: why should there be a difference praising one individual for their biological advantage and punishing the other?
