Cases Flashcards
3 yr old mini pig.
-decreased bone density
-increase dietary Ca:P ratio to 3:1 by supplementing with calcium carbonate
4 month old Fe intact domestic shorthair cat
-fed canned cat food
-lethargy, cough, retching, Melina, pica, BCS 3/9, wheezing
-high Ca
-doxy = tetracycline bind to Ca
Adult Fe Holstein.
-decrease milk production after calving
-nervous ketosis, bilateral blindness
-good prognosis
-glucose IV 1L 50% Dextrose in jug + oral supplement SID
Grazing Braford heifers.
-blind, agitated, ataxic, gait, BCS 5/9
-decreased Vit A due to drought
13 mo old Angus steer.
-full grain ration
-high HR 80, static rumen
-neurological
-polio based on CS & resp to Tx
-grain makes thiaminase (B1) in rumen & no thymen to brain = disorientation
-test food & water for H2S made in brain
2 yr old corriedale Ram.

-penis: gritty material on prepuce, vermiform appendage blocked
-high BUN, creatinine, K, fibrinogen
-enlarged bladder w crystals & high pH urine
-ruminant urolithiasis
>high grain, low roughage = high phos, low Ca
>decrease saliva = extra phos removed from blood by kidney & excreted in urine -> urine phos high -> phos settle into stone pellets
Tiger cub.
-12lb raw meat daily
-losing weight, crawl only w difficulty & pain
-supplemented w calcium carbonate
-nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism
>raw meat 1:25 Ca to Phos ratio
>even in presence of adequate Ca, high Phos trigger hyperparathyroidism & Ca loss
6 mo old quarter horse.
-stiff gait
-TPR WNL
-developmental orthopedic disease (DOD
>swelling around growth plate of long bone in fast growing heavy foals
