Case Study - Coastal Management - why needed, methods used, costs and benefits Flashcards
Name a coastal management case study:
The Holderness coast.
Where is it?
Its in East Yorkshire Coast.
Why is it needed?
The coast is eroding very fast, this is because of the soft rocks which are made up of boulder clay.
What methods were used?
Different methods are used for different methods along the coastline. Examples are; Groynes were used at Mappleton. They also put in some Sea walls at Bridlington. They have also done beach replenishment along the coast line. They also used Rip-rap. Blocks of granite were imported from Norway.
Hard or soft engineering?
Soft engineering and Hard engineering.
What were the benefits of this management?
The groynes were effective at Mappleton, The sea walls protected Bridlington and the beach replenishment was successful. The rock groynes was effective in protecting the main road in Mappleton B1242
What were the problems of this management?
There were many problems such as; increasing the erosion in the South of Mappleton this Is because they put a groyne in place for the North of Mappleton. This caused all of the material to be collect at Mappleton therefore there were less beach sediment further south. Erosion was increased at the south of Mappleton because of the longshore drift being stopped.
