North Korea- Trade Protectionism
Politically switched off to global flows:
North Korea’s authoritarian regime is characterised by heavy sate control, sanction evasion and limited interaction with global markets. Its principal trading partner is China and other politically aliened nations such as Russia. Korean solders have fought in Russia’s Ukrainian conflict and in exchange Russia has provided significant oil shipments.

Economically switched off to global flows:
Strict self-reliance policy means it is switched off to global flows. In relation to its military activities it received significant external sanctions which have closed doors to economic activity.
Trade protectionism
Govt policy which discourages international trade and supports domestic industry. Common forms do include subsidies and quotas.
Heavy state control over the direction and nature of the economy.
Sahel- physical and environmental reasons why switched off from global flows
Statistics:
80% of those in the region live on aprox 2USD /day
4.2 million displaced people
Only 4% of people have access to electricity in Chad
Up to 45 degrees during the day
Landlocked countries like Chad and Niger have limited opportunity for trade unlike Nigeria which has been unlocked by growing global flows however due to political instability, in access and lack of quality of life for stakeholders in centre sahel there is little surprise that it is switched off from global flows.

Statistics:
Unknown amount of London property held by oligarchs mainly because offshoring firms hide may resources.
Wealthy Russian Oligarchs who benefited from the fall of the soviet union. Many of these have established homes in London and built bilateral relationships. This influx of wealth can create jobs and further intertwine jobs between places. Oligarchs also buy businesses which creates dependency between the economy and govt.
Low wage migration from India to the UAE and deepening interdependence between regions.
Statistics:
2.8 million Indians in UAE
13bn remittances in 2022
68bn bilateral trade in 2022.
Since 1970’s this migration has strong economic ties and India is the largest source of labour in the UAE creating social and economic ties within the region. Many of these workers work in blue collar industry and had a large role in building the stadiums for the Qutar world cup.
