Case Studies and Content Analysis Flashcards
Case studies
detailed analysis of an unusual individual or event
characteristics
tend to produce qualitative data and be longitudinal
Case studies evaluation
strengths- insight into unusual cases, generate hypothesis for future studies
weakness- generalisation is a problem and conclusions based on subjective interpretation of the researcher
Content analysis
a form of observation in which communication is studied indirectly
coding and quantitative data
data must be categorised into meaningful units
thematic analysis and qualitative data
recurrent ideas that keep ‘cropping up’ in the communication are described
content analysis evaluation
strengths- fewer ethical issues and high external validity
weaknesses- info may be studied out of context and descriptive forms of analysis may be less objective
