What does anti HAV IgG suggest?
Previous infection or vaccinated
What does anti HBsAb suggest?
Vaccinated against HBV
What does anti-HCV antibodies suggest?
Infection - no vaccine exists
What is the possible outcome for patients recently infected with HCV?
Although asymptomatic, high chance of becoming carriers (70%), 40% chance of chronic liver disease becoming cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma
How is HCV treated?
Until recently with alpha-interferon and ribavirin, but only worked in small proportion of people and had unpleasant side effects.
New specific antivirals exist: protease inhibitors and RNA polymerase inhibitors with 90% cure rate - but extremely expensive ($80,000USD)
