Because the patient is immunosuppressed

A
Gancyclovir
Like acyclovir but targets thymidine kinase of CMV specifically

How could CMV infection via a donor kidney have been prevented?
A
Try and avoid CMV+ve donation
Give patient prophylaxis before and after transplant with gancyclovir if CMV+ve unavoidable
