Cartilage CT Flashcards
What is Cartilage?
a CT that is firm, but flexible
- 80% water
- grat shock absorber and resists compression
What is Cartilage covered with?
the perichondrium
- this helps resister outer expansion when cartilage is compressed
- contains mesenchymal stem cells
Is cartilage innervated or vascular?
no
How do nutrients and gases get to cartilage?
by diffusion
What cells are found in cartilage?
Chondroblasts and Chondrcytes
What are chondroblasts?
they form the cartilage matrix and are located next to the perichondrium and within growth plates
What are chondrocytes?
mature cells that are embedded within the extracellular matrix in a space referred to as a cartilage lacuna
What types of fibers are found in all cartilage types?
type 2 collagen
What are the different types of cartilage?
Hyaline- ends of bones, good shock absorbers
Elastic- ear, epiglottis, and eustachian tube
Fibrocartilage- intervertebral disks, super tough, has type 1 collagen as well as 2
How does growth of cartilage happen?
in one of 2 ways
- Appositional growth: chondroblasts next to perichondrium deposit one layer of cartilage on top of another.. piling on
- Interstitial growth: expanding from within. Chondrocytes within cartilage divide.
What are some cartilage-related disorders?
Hip and knee osteoarthritis: break down of hyaline cartilage from wear and tear over time or due to physical damage
-torn meniscus is a common injury in sports
