Carpus Flashcards
Which are the bones found in the proximal row of the carpus?
Scaphoid, Lunate, Triquetrum, Pisiform
Which bones r found in the distal row of the carpus?
Trapezoid (small), trapezium, capitate, hamate
What is the most prominent feature of the palmar carpal face?
The carpal tunel
What are the borders of the carpal canal?
The radial and the Ulnar eminence
What creates the ulnar eminence?
The piciform+the hook of hamate
What creates the radial eminence?
By the tubercle of the scaphoid bone + the tubercle of trapezium
What spans the carpal tunnel and what does it attach to?
The flexor retinaculum. Attaches to the scaphoid and the trapezium on one side, and to the hamate and triquetrum on the other side.
which bones form the floor of the radial notch?
scaphoid and the trapezium
which tendon attaches to the pisiform?
flexor carpalis ulnaris
what is the anatomical snuffbox?
the floor of the radial notch, important cuz it’s usually fractured. If treated inadequately it can lead to pseudoarthrosis and necrosis of a fragment. EDIT THIS !
what’s the carpal tunnel syndrome?
it is caused by the disproportion of the carpal tunnel and it’s contents, causing the median nerve to be compressed, therefore leading to numbness, tingling and the weakness of the hand
describe the scaphoid
largest bone in prox. row,
has a tubercle on it’s palmar surface,
has blood vessels on its distal end/face
most often fractured
What bones does the scaphoid articulate with?
PROXIMALLY: radius
DISTALLY: trapezium+trapezoid
MEDIALLY: lunate+capitate
with which bones does the lunate articulate?
PROXIMALLY: radius+the articular disk
MEDIALLY: triquetrum
LATERALLY: scaphoid
DISTALLY: capitate/sometimes hamate
describe triquetrum
pyramidal, apex pointing medially, base laterally
