Change in bowel and bladder habits
A sore throat that does not heal
Unusual bleeding or discharge
Thickening or lump in the breast, testicles or other area
Indigestion or difficulty swallowing
Obvious change in size, color, shape, or thickness of a wart, mole, or mouth sore
Nagging cough or hoarseness
what is the most common childhood cancer
acute lymphocytic leukemia - acquired leukemic cells
what are some environmental factors for acute lymphocytic leukemia
radiation, exposure, drugs, benzine exposure, advanced maternal age
what are some ss of acute lymphocytic leukemia
fever, fatigue, lethargy, enlarged lymph nodes, abdominal distention, pallor, anorexia, bone/joint pain
how do you diagnose acute lymphocytic leukemia
CBC, liver/kidney function, bone marrow aspiration, lumbar puncture
what are the phases of chemo
Remission-induction – 2 weeks long to kill abnormal cells
Consolidation – after last phase lasts 6 months, decrease cells/production of them
Maintenance – after then 3 years prevents regrowth
what is autologous bone marrow transplant
patients own blood and bone marrow
what is allogenic bone marrow transplant
from sibling, parent, unrelated donor
what is an infants perception of death
– only understand in the degree of personal discomfort and reaction of other, provide basic needs, non nutritive sucking, swaddling
what is a toddlers perception of death
can understand something is wrong but unable to deceive fact from fantasy, see death as reversible may have fear and sadness, encourage parent to stay with child
