CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM: Part 1 Flashcards
A closed system of the heart and blood vessels
Cardiovascular System
Three types of Blood Vessels
Arteries, Veins, and Capillaries
The heart pumps what?
Blood
Blood vessels’ function
Allow blood to circulate to all parts of the body
Give at least 2 functions of the cardiovascular system
• Transport Oxygen
• Transport Nutrients
• Transport Cell Wastes
• Tranport Hormones to and from cells
Shape, size, and weight of heart
Like a pine cone, as big as a fist, and weighs less than a pound
This organ is located in the thoracic cavity, between the lungs in the inferiority mediastinum.
Heart
What is the term for the inferior tip of the heart?
Apex
True or False. Apex is directed toward right hip and rests on the diaphragm.
False. Left Hip
True or False. Base points toward the left shoulder.
False. Right Shoulder
The heart sits within fluid filled cavity known as?
Pericardial Cavity
Special membranes of pericardial is called?
Pericardium
Pericardium is usually describe as a?
Double wall sacked
True or False. Fibrous pericardium is loose and superficial.
True.
What type of membrane is Pericardium?
Serous Membrane
An outside layer that lines the inner surface of the fibrous pericardium.
Parietal Pericardium
A layer that is next to the heart, also known as the epicardium.
Visceral Pericardium
This fluid is important to lubricate the heart and prevent friction between the beating heart and its surrounding organs. Also serves to hold the heart in position and maintain a hollow space for the heart to expand when it is full.
Serous Fluid
A thick wall in middle layer which is mostly composed of cardiac muscle.
Myocardium
A thin wall in the inner layer. It has simple squamous cells, it is very smooth, and has the function for keeping blood from sticking to the inside of the heart to forming potentially deadly blood cloths.
Endocardium or Endothelium
What are the four chambers of the heart
Atria (Left and Right) & Ventricles (Left and Right)
This chambers of the heart is considered the receiving chambers. They assists with filling the ventricles and blood enters under low pressure.
Left and Right Atria
