Cardiovascular System Flashcards
What does the cardiovascular system consist up of ?
Blood
Blood vessels
The heart
Why does the body transport oxygen around the body ?
Oxygen to working muscles
Oxygen to vital organs
Oxygen for energy production in physical activity
What are the two types of nutrients needed for an athlete ?
Macronutrients
Micronutrients
What are platelets used for ?
Clotting of wounds to prevent blood loss
Why is regulation of blood temperature important ?
So that we do not overheat when we exercise as heat is a byproduct of exercise
Prevents hypothermia when cold
Which side of the side of the heart diagram is the vena cava ?
Left on the diagram under the pulmonary vein
What’s the job of the ventricles ?
To pump blood out of the heart and around the body
What’s the job of the atrium ?
The collection point of blood coming into the heart
Whats the job of the vena cava ?
Carry’s blood from the body back to the heart
Whats the job of the pulmonary arteries ?
carries deoxygenated blood away from the right ventricle to the lungs
What’s the job of the pulmonary vein ?
returns oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart
What are the 3 types of blood vessels ?
Capillary
Vein
Artery
What the job of platelets ?
They clot to prevent blood loss
What are the 3 functions of the cardiovascular system ?
- transport of oxygen, carbon dioxide and nutrients
- clotting of open wounds
- regulation of body temperature
What is stroke volume ?
the amount of blood pumped out of the ventricles each time they contract
