Cardiovascular system Flashcards
Arteries
the blood vessels that deliver oxygen rich blood from the heart to the tissues of the body
Blood Vessels
arteries, veins, capillaries
deliver blood to the organs and tissues in your body
Capillaries
tiny blood vessels that transport blood, nutrients, and oxygen to cells
Deoxygenated
blood is darker due to the difference in shape of the red blood cell when oxygen binds to hemoglobin in the blood cell versus not binding
Heart
a hollow muscular organ that pumps the blood through the circulatory system by contraction and dilation
Oxygen
a colorless, odorless reactive gas, the chemical element of atomic number * and the life supporting component of the air
Oxygenated
supplied, treated, or enriched with oxygen
Pulmonary Circulation
a vast network of arteries, veins, and lymphatics that function to exchange blood and other tissue fluids between the heart, lungs, and back
Systematic Circulation
provides the functional blood supply to all body tissue
Veins
veins are blood vessels in humans that carry blood towards the heart
Size of Heart
a little larger than the size of your fist
How many Chambers does the heart have
two upper and two lower chambers
Location of heart
front of your chest. it sits slightly behind and to the left of your sternum.
Apex
the heart is at the lower side and the apex of the lung is at the top
Endocardium
the innermost layer of the heart and lines the chambers and extends over projecting structures such as valves
Myocardium
cardiac muscle cells arranged in overlapping spiral patterns
Pericardium
is a membrane or sac that surrounds your heart. it holds the heart in place and helps it work properly
Atria
thin walled chambers that receive blood from the veins
Ventricles
a hollow part or cavity in an organ
Tricuspid Valve
it separates the upper and lower chambers. allows deoxygenated blood to flow through both chambers
Pulmonary Valve
a one way door from your hearts right ventricle to the lungs
Mitral Valve
keeps blood flowing in the right direction
Aortic Valve
helps keep blood flowing in the correct direction
Blood Pressure
the pressure of the blood in the circulatory system
Pulse
a rhythmical throbbing of the arteries as blood is propelled through them
