Cardiovascular Function - Week 8 Flashcards
what are the pathways of blood?
systemic and pulmonary
what makes up cardiovascular system
heart, blood vessels, lymphatic system, blood
T/F: Pulmonary circulation moves through the left side of the heart.
False. Moves through right side. moves from right atrium-right ventricle-pulmonary valve-R+L pulmonary arteries
what is after load?
pressure the L ventricle must do to push blood through aortic valve
what is preload?
amount of blood retiring to the heart
Patient comes in complaining of chest pain. You check their blood pressure and find that it is 122/76. Should you be concerned?
No. The normal blood pressure is 120/80 so this patients’ would be close enough to the normal
blood pressure =
cardiac output + peripheral resistance
what is peripheral resistance?
force opposing blood in peripheral circulation
what is cardiac output?
amount of blood pumped out in 1 min
cardiac output =
stroke volume + HR
what is stroke volume?
blood ejected w each contraction from L ventricle
pulse pressure =
systolic pressure - diastolic pressure
what happens to peripheral resistance during vasoconstriction?
increases, bc the vessel is smaller so the force opposing blood is going to increase
A 72 year old patient comes in for a check up. When taking their blood pressure, you measure 170/99. Should you be concerned?
Yes. For patients over the age of 60, the normal BP range is 150/90. This patient should be diagnosed with hypertension
A 58 year old patient has a blood pressure of 150/87. Should you be concerned?
Slightly. For patients 60 and younger, the target blood pressure is 140/90. When they reach age 60, the target systolic blood pressure norm goes o 150. For this person’s age, they should be diagnosed with hypertension.
