Cardiovascular Drugs Flashcards
Example of statin
Simvastatin
What do statins do?
Block HMG CoA reductase - an enzyme involved in production of cholesterol in the liver
When are used statins used?
For hypercholesterolaemia, diabetes, angina, MI, CVA, high risk of CVA/MI
Side effects of statins?
Muscle inflammation (myopathy), rhabomyolsis
What is rhabomyolsis?
The breakdown of skeletal muscle accumulating in toxic wastes which can lead to renal failure.
How are statins taken?
Orally
When do statins not work to lower LDL?
Familal hypercholesterolaemia - where LDL receptors are absent
Example of fibrate?
Bezafibrate
What do fibrates do?
Reduce the concentration of cholesterol in blood.
When are fibrates used?
In hypertriglycaemia and low HDL cholesterol
What do PCSK 9 Inhibitors do?
Lower LDL level in blood
What are PCSK9 Inhibitors?
Monoclonal antibodies
What are some examples of PCSK9 Inhibitors?
Evolocumab, alirocumab
What do PCSK 9 inhibitors do?
Prevent the binding of PCSK9 to LDLR
When are PCSK 9 inhibitors used?
Familial hypercholesterolaemia
What are some anti platelet drugs?
Aspirin, pragugrel, clopidrogel and ticagrelor
What do anti platelet drugs do?
Reduce platelet aggregation and clot formation
When are anti platelet drugs used?
High risk of MI / CVA
What are some side effects of anti platelet drugs?
Haemorrhage
