Cardiopulmonary Flashcards
What are the congenital Heart conditions we should be aware of?
Patent foramen ovale Patent ductus arteriosis Atrial septal defects ventricular septal defects coarctation of the aorta Tetrology of Fallot
What are some clinical signs of respiratory failure?
Tachypnea
Cyanosis
Most distal areas affected greatest
What is Cystic fibrosis?
Inherited progressive disorder
Exocrine glands
Pancreatic insufficiency
Hyperplasia of mucous producing cells in lungs
Give interventions to treat cystic fibrosis
Bronchial hygiene: percussion and vibration Inhaled medications Chest wall mobility exercises Optimal postural alignment Cardiopulmonary conditioning
Should you talk to toddlers about surgical procedures before the procedure?
No, they do not understand the procedure and it may scare them, explain the procedure to them as it happens
Why are gross motor developmental delays common in infants and children with severe anomalies?
They are unable to assume tummy time because of surgical scarring and incisions

Surfactant therapy
What are the cardinal signs of Tetralogy of Fallot?
- Bluish skin when feeding and before or after a nap, in the hands, nail beds, and lips
- Rapid breathing, may faint or lose consciousness
Describe Tetralogy of Fallot
- VSD, pulmonary stenosis, overriding aorta and thickening of the ventricular wall
- Not enough blood gets to lungs causing deoxygenated blood to be distributed to the body
Which congenital heart defect is most common in children with Down Syndrome?
patent ductus arteriosis
What is the proper handling techniques for children post-opertivley (cardiac surgery)?
DONT pick up under arms!! Sternum needs time to heal.
Go under bottom and support them.
What are symptoms of asthma?
Chronic lung disease Inflammation and constriction of airways Wheezing Chest tightness Shortness of breath Coughing Medication to control symptoms (Reduced breast feeding)
