Cardiac Rehab Flashcards
Which phase of cardiac rehab is an acute phase and begins when the pt is medically stable following MI, CABG, PTCA, valve repair, heart transplant or CHF?
cardiac phase 1
Which phase of cardiac rehab is the subacute phase of rehab and begins as early as 24 hrs after discharge, lasts up to 6 wks?
cardiac phase 2
Which phase of cardiac rehab is training or intensive rehab that extends indefinitely and pts exercise in larger groups and continue to progress their exercise program, RESISTANCE TRAINING starts in this phase?
cardiac phase 3
Which phase of cardiac rehab is the maintenance phase in which individuals who are at high risk for infarction participate due to their risk factor profile?
cardiac phase 4
What are some of the goals of IP phase of cardiac rehab?
assess for home safety or alternative discharge site, ability to do self-care and ambulation activities, educate pt and family on risk factors, how to self-monitor, and general activity guidelines
In the acute phase, if your pt has heart rate limiting medications, how do you measure intensity of therapy session?
use RPE
What is the general progression for acute cardiac rehab?
get pt oob by day 1 or 2
day 2, perform seated warm up exercises and walking in room
day 3-4, walking in hallway, self-care activities
*sessions should be 1x daily for 10 mins! up to 15 for pts with less restrictions
What are some things that would make you a candidate for cardiac rehab?
MI w/in the past 12 months, CABG, stable angina, PTCA, heart or lung transplant, heart valve repair or replacement
What are some of the goals for outpatient cardiac rehab?
- improve pt cardiovascular fitness without exceeding limits of safe exercise
- assess for sternal stability and follow sternal precautions
- pt education to understand their condition
- increase confidence for pt to go back to previous activities as tolerated
- reduce personal cardiovascular risk factors
How would out patient cardiac rehab look like? (duration, intensity, frequency, type)
mostly aerobic, use target HR or perceived exertion, start with short intervals of 2-5 min and build to 20-30 mins, frequency: short intervals, build up to multiple times per day 20-30 mins at a time for 5-7 days/week
What are things to consider when doing resistance training in the outpatient setting?
avoid straining, weight should be 30-50% 1RM, 8-10 reps of each mm group, 70-85% max HR, 40-50% max HR in elderly or people with severe ventricular dysfunction
How do you calculate target heart rate using the Karvonen method?
((Max HR- Resting HR)*training percentage)+ Resting HR = target heart rate
t/f, combining UE and LE exercise can produce a higher maximal oxygen consumption than that produced by either segment alone
true
Participation in resistance training may begin following:
a minimum of ______ weeks post MI including 4 weeks of continuous program participation
a minimum of __ weeks post CABG including 3 weeks of continuous program participation
a minimum of __ weeks of consistent participation post PTCA
