Carboxylic Acids Flashcards
What is a carboxylic acid
A weak organic acid that has at least one carboxyl group in it
What is a carboxyl group
A Carbon atom that is double bonded to oxygen and single bonded to a hydroxyl group.
OH-C=O (COOH)
I’m what is the simplest aromatic carboxylic acid called?
Benzoic acid
What happens when a compound has more than one carboxyl group?
The number of the carbons that have the carboxyl group then a prefix such as di ,tri, tetra, penta, hexa, etc is added before -carboxylic acid.
What are the properties of a carboxylic acid
They have two polar groups (carbonyl & hydroxyl) which makes a carboxylic acid VERY POLAR.
Very soluble due to their hydrogen bonds, however, the more carbons the are the less soluble it becomes.
A very high melting point compared to their hydrocarbon counter part due to their dipole interactions of the polar carboxyl group.
They affect acid-base reaction and can be indicated using LITMUS PAPER.
Can react with bases and form a neutralization reaction
Reactions of carboxylic acids
Oxidation reaction:
Primary alcohol + (O) = aldehyde
Aldehyde + (O) +dichromate (Cr2O7) as a catalyst = carboxylic acid
NOTE THAT THE DICHROMATE GOES FROM ORANGE TO GREEN DURING THE REACTION
How to name a carboxylic acid
1- longest carbon chain including carbon from carboxyl group.
2- drop the “-e” add “-oic”
