Carbon dioxide/acid rain Flashcards
describe 4 properties of carbon dioxide
- colourless
- odourless
- denser than air
- slightly soluble in water
which way is carbon dioxide collected and why?
- downwards
- denser than air
name two ways of producing carbon dioxide
- reacting acid with carbonate
- decomposition of carbonate
which carbonate is used in lab preparation and why?
- calcium carbonate in form of marble chips
- easy to handle/ reaction not too fast/ steady production rate for ease of collecting
what is thermal decomposition?
breaking down by heat
what is a carbonate broken down into?
metal oxide and carbon dioxide
observations when calcium carbonate decomposed
colour change from green to black because of copper oxide
name a carbonate which does not decompose in bunsen flame
sodium carbonate
name two uses of carbon dioxide
- carbonated drinks
- fire extinguishers
how is carbon dioxide used for carbonated drinks?
- slightly soluble in water
- dissolves in water under pressure
- forms carbonic acid
- used in fizzy drinks (open bottle-the bubbles is carbon dioxide/ left too long will become flat because carbon dioxide escaped)
why is carbon dioxide used in fire extinguishers?
- denser than air
- sinks onto flame
- prevents oxygen from reaching flame
- safer for electrical fires rather than water extinguishers
why is rain naturally acidic?
because of dissolved carbon dioxide
what is pH of normal rain?
around 6
what is pH of acid rain?
pH
which pollutant gases contribute to acid rain and where do they come from?`
- sulphur dioxide from power stations
- nitrogen oxide from petrol engines
