Carbon cycle management techniques Flashcards
Agricultural practices name 4 examples
- agroforestry
- polyculture
- storing manure
- avoiding heavy machinery
What is agroforestry ?
planting of trees and farming to provide shlter and moisture for the aoil to increase carbon sequestration
what is polyculture?
growing crops with trees between them.
What is storing manure?
using anaeobic containers to collect silage and create renewable energy resources
What does avoiding heavy machinery do ?
doesn’t compact soil, so water can infiltrate and therefore increases the carbon sequestration rate
How has decarbonisation of economic activity occured?
- energy efficiency - buildings adapted to be better insulated
- 0 carbon emission electricity generation with TNCs investing in alternative productions
- shift from fossil fuel use to electric cars etc
Modifying of industrial combustion
- carbon capture and storage techniques uses technology to capture atospheric carbon
- gas transported to a site where it is stored which lowers the atmospheric emissions
- can act to lower global emissions by 19%
Modifying industrial combustion case study example
Boundary dam canada
* retrofitted to capture co2
* costly/unsure of fixture implications
* ais to reduce emisions by 90%
wetland restoration
Holds 30% of terrestrial carbon
* peatlands drained for agriculture causes for peat to release co2 to atmosphere and as organic matter decomposes and is eroded by wind releasing co2
* so need to rrserve these areas tor educe he co2 emissions to the atmosphere
Example of the wetland restoration
In east anglia imporving availability to wetland areas
Afforestation
- planting trees in deforested areas
- UNREDD - provides initiatives to LIDCs to replant trees often with financial incentives
- Individuals of carbon setting linking businesses with environmental goals seems effective
- UK forestry comission - manages uK woodlands
Decarbonising transport
- ^ cycling and walking promoted through cycle lanes and cycle to work schemes
- 0 emission buses with 4,000 being made
