Carbon Cycle Flashcards
1
Q
What nutrients are made at the start of the carbon cycle?
A
Carbohydrates, fats and proteins
2
Q
How is CO2 released into the atmosphere?
A
Through the respiration of plants, animals and microorganisms
Through combustion
3
Q
Where is CO2 for photosynthesis taken from?
A
The atmosphere
4
Q
How does carbon enter the food chain?
A
When plants get eaten
5
Q
What eats the dead plants/animals and their waste?
A
Detritus feeders and microorganisms
6
Q
How does the cycle restart?
A
When the soil absorbs nutrients from waste and passes them on to plants
7
Q
What are the steps of the carbon cycle?
A
- CO2 from the atmosphere is used for photosynthesis - nutrients are made
- Plants respire and are burnt (combustion) to release CO2
- Carbon meets the food chain when animals eat plants
- Animals respire and their products (fossil fuels) are burnt to release CO2
- Detritus feeders eat dead plants/animals and their waste, then respire and release more CO2
- The soil takes in the nutrients from waste and passes them onto plants
- The cycle continues
