25 - Plant Hormones Flashcards
What is auxin?
A hormone which controls growth in tips, shoots and roots
What do auxins respond to?
Light
Gravity
Moisture
What do auxins do in shoots and roots?
Encourage shoot growth
Inhibit root growth
How do shoots grow towards light?
Auxins are destroyed by light
The side far from the sun grows more and the shoot bends towards the light
How do shoots grow away from gravity?
Auxins are drawn by gravity so the lower side grows more
Shoot bends upwards
How do roots grow towards gravity?
Extra auxin gathers towards gravity
The top side will grow more and bend the root downwards
How do roots grow towards moisture?
Auxins gather where there is more moisture
The less moist side will grow more so the root points to the water
How are hormones used in weedkillers?
Specific hormones inhibit weed growth patterns
How is auxin helpful in plant cloning?
Auxin is in rooting powder which speeds up root growth
