Carbohydrates Flashcards
What makes up Lactose?
B(1-4) glycosidic bond
Galactose to Glucose
What makes up Trehalose?
a(1-1)glycosidic bond
Glucose to Glucose
What make up Maltose?
a(1-4) glycosidic bond
Glucose to Glucose
What makes up Sucrose?
a(1-2) glycosidic bond
Glucose to Fructose
What makes bond makes glycogen?
a (1-6) glycosidic bond
What is the bond in cellulose that makes it unable to be consumed by humans?
B (1-4) glycosidic linkage
Describe where the Lactose Intolerance localizes and protein is responsible?
Lactase Deficency in the Duodenum
Mini-Chromosome Maintenance (MCM6)- protein turns on/off LCT gene that makes lactase
What are the three common GAGs?
Heparin, Chondroitin, Hyaluronic acid
What is the difference between Proteoglycan and Glycoprotein?
Proteoglycan- Mainly polysaccharides with small percentage of protein
Glycoproteins- Mainly proteins with a small portion of carbohydrates
What do Heparins do?
Prevents blood clotting due to its negative charge, made by Mast Cells
Where are chondroitons found?
Cartilage tendon and bone
Heparan Sulfate
Extracellular GAG on epithelial cells to prevent blotting/binding
Hyaluronic Acid
Synovial fluid, vitreous humor, loose connective tissue and cartilage
Keratan Sulfates
Found in corneas and loose connective tissue
Dematan Sulfates
Found in skin, blood vessels, and heart valves
